Labcraft celebrates 60 years of innovation in low voltage lighting

Market leading UK LED lighting designer and manufacturer, Labcraft Ltd, celebrate their 60th anniversary this year. A leader in Commercial Vehicle LED lighting, the Labcraft journey has been different to say the least, but at its core has been the willingness to innovate and to identify new market trends.

Labcraft was founded in Ilford when Albert Luscombe invested in the idea to manufacture signal boosters for the burgeoning TV market. The mid-fifties saw the caravan market boom and after a holiday in Cornwall, Albert came up with a transistor circuit to enable fluorescent bulbs to work off a low voltage DC supply such as a car battery. Labcraft had their first breakthrough and the future path for Labcraft was illuminated …..

The product took off and quickly Labcraft was the main player in the UK, with a sizeable chunk of the European Caravan lighting market as well. The product rapidly displaced gas lamps and tungsten bulbs and soon the Emergency sector, Commercial Vehicles and Leisure craft were all clamouring for these innovative products.

Labcraft moved to a large factory in Romford and then added another factory in Chelmsford shortly afterwards. Never one to sit on their laurels, they extended the product range to include battery chargers, caravan water pumps and even electronic clock radios.

But lighting has always been at the core of Labcraft and 2001 saw the launch of their first LED product, again innovating the industry. Today, Labcraft exclusively produce LED lighting solutions which are all designed, engineered and manufactured in their 15,000sqft factory in Saffron Walden, Essex. Last year Labcraft produced over 300,000 LED lights utilising 4.2 million high quality Cree LED devices.

In 2015 Labcraft was the first to offer a 10 year warranty on their LED products, leading the market by offering their customers true “fit & forget” lighting solutions.

At its heart Labcraft is a family run business with Albert Luscombe’s sons, Barry and Rod, taking over the business which is now run by his grandson Nick. “Although at the forefront of innovation some things have stayed the same, Labcraft remains a family run business committed to providing customers with the highest quality of products and service” said Nick Luscombe, MD.
